ESTHER MATHIS | ERA FLUIDO

Metronom continues its exhibition programme with Era Fluido [It Was Flowing], a solo show by Esther Mathis which opens Saturday 8th February at 18.30. Curated by Angela Madesani the exhibition presents a selection of works created by this Swiss artist since 2011.

Esther Mathis' exhibition is at once delicate and powerful. Side by side with a clearly physical inquiry into phenomena are images of natural elements, like a sort of recording of the surrounding world and at the same time an inquiry of existential matrix. Esther Mathis' artistic research is based on themes such as loss, distance and melancholy, with a clear reference to German romantic culture. The diptych on show is a photographic work, part of the project Vergissmeinnicht (Forget-me-not) which grew out of the intention to create an archive of moments through photography. This personal investigation is united with an interest in science, revealed in the titles of two works: Q =-2.26 x 106 x m, is a cloud physics formula and L = 4πR2oT4eff  is the formula for the luminosity of stars. As she herself stated in a recent interview, "I have a great interest in science, neurology and biology which can supply explanations for natural phenomena".

The exhibition itinerary, which consists of an installation and fifteen black and white photographs, reveals the leading role of photography in Esther Mathis' artistic research, understood also as a springboard for exploring other forms of expression.

Era fluido is the first solo show in Italy by Esther Mathis, winner of the annual Kunstmuseum Winterthur Prize.
